Stop Impulse Shopping With One Five-Word Question

Nobody needs a lecture about shopping less. What helps is pausing before purchase, long enough to ask yourself one honest question. In a recent post, I talked about why the urge to shop is so difficult. If you missed it, you can read it here.
Know What Happens in the Moment Before You Buy
You stand in a shop with a mug you don't need, or a sweater that's almost the same as three sweaters at home, or a souvenir from a day trip you already photographed twelve times.
You start making excuses for it. "It's useful." "It's on sale." "I might regret leaving it behind." "It's only twenty dollars."
Small purchases don't look dangerous on their own. You don't fill up your home from a single big decision. You fill it from hundreds of little ones.
Ask Yourself This Before You Reach for Your Wallet
But what if I don't?
That's it; five words, no lecture, and no budgeting worksheet.
Ask this question, and you can stop asking why you should buy it and start asking what actually happens if you leave it here. Usually, the answer is not much.
A man I was decluttering with bought tools regularly. One Saturday, he picked up a gadget that sharpened drill bits (he already owned two sharpeners at home). He took my suggestion, paused, asked himself, "But what if I don't?" and put it back.
"I forgot about it before I reached the parking lot," he told me a week later.
The desire fades much faster than the stuff does.

See What You Gain When You Don't Buy
If I buy it | If I don't | |
Space | I need to find room for it | I keep my shelf space |
Money | I spend money I'd planned for something else | I still have the money next week |
Time | I unpack it, find a spot, maybe return it | I save myself the future chore |
Clutter | I add one more thing to manage | I keep things simpler |
A week from now | I might barely remember buying it | I probably won't remember it at all |
You Don't Need Willpower to Stop
